U.S. Department of Transportation launches new public awareness campaign
The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today launched a new public awareness campaign called Safe Cars Save Lives that urges consumers to check for open recalls at least twice a year and to get their vehicles fixed as soon as parts are available. Last year, there were close to 900 recalls affecting 51 million vehicles nationwide. Every year, on average, 25 percent of recalled vehicles are left unrepaired.
“Recalls are a serious safety issue that should be promptly addressed,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “An informed consumer is one of our strongest allies in ensuring recalled vehicles are repaired. Do not wait to act if your car is under recall and the parts are available.” Read more here.

LOS ANGELES ORANGE COUNTY TEENS WIN “DRIVE SAFE LOS ANGELES” PSA CONTEST
A group of high school students from chapters of  the “Friday Night Live Partnership” in Los Angeles, California won the top prize in the first Drive Safe Los Angeles PSA Contest.  The contest, sponsored by The National Road Safety Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to encourage teen safe driving, was promoted by the organizers of the LA Auto Show, which opened November 20th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Reality Check
Think of a Reality Check as a youth-led “meeting of the minds” on the issue of underage drinking and driving. It’s a time when people can get together, face today’s reality, ask the hard questions, talk openly about the problems of underage drinking and driving, learn from each other, commit to making a change, and then help others make changes, too.

The entire focus of a Reality Check is one thing: educating parents and teens about the dangers of underage drinking and driving — what is really happening in your community — so they can work together to stop it. They’re a time to get a real picture of what’s actually happening and how everyone is being affected; they’re a time to get a true Reality Check.

For many years, groups have held what they’ve called town hall meetings. These meetings are a great way to inform people about issues and then find solutions. Reality Checks seek to do just that: Inform people and find solutions. Like town hall meetings, Reality Checks are also a great way to get your message across to the public by getting the media, community leaders, parents, and teens involved. Read more here.

The 2015-2016 TeenDrive365 Video Challenge
The 2015-2016 TeenDrive365 Video Challenge has begun and, now, there are even more chances to win!

Learning to drive is one of the coolest times for a teen. But facts have shown it can be extremely dangerous. You have the power to inspire your fellow teens, maybe better than a teacher or a parent can, because you know what messages will be the most powerful. Create a 30-60 second video for your fellow teen drivers that highlights the importance of safe teen driving and you could win $15,000, or one of 14 other prizes!
Contest ends March 7, 2016. See more here.

#EndImpairedDriving
GHSA has teamed up with Responsibility.org, The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), National Safety Council (NSC), National Sleep Foundation, Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving (RADD), and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to release this new video public service announcement reminding Americans that driving impaired – in any form – is dangerous and preventable.
